Stollery Children’s Hospital – Urgent Psychiatry Clinic

Referral Pathway

Following a presentation to the Stollery Emergency Department or Crisis Team, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians are required to consult on-call Psychiatry for approval of referral.
Once approved, the referral is entered through electronic medical record/Connect Care. Referrals are reviewed by the clinical team to determine if Urgent Clinic is the most appropriate service and, if so, the priority of the referral; a decision will be communicated within 2 weeks by the Clinic Nurse.
If approved, the aim is to have the first consult appointment within 3-4 weeks after the ED/Crisis presentation.

Description of Service

The Urgent Clinic provides urgent, short-term psychiatric care for children and youth experiencing a mental health crisis-who do not otherwise have access to psychiatry on an urgent basis. Following a presentation to the Stollery Emergency Department or the Crisis Team, a referral may be made to the Urgent Clinic; referrals are reviewed by the clinical team to determine if Urgent Clinic is the most appropriate service and, if so, the priority of the referral. Urgent Clinic provides:

  • psychiatric consultation & assessment
  • short-term follow-up
  • medication optimization
  • assistance with connection to appropriate community mental health services
